GALVA - Dale J. Davenport, 76, of Galva, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2024, at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center of Cherokee. A private family burial will be held at the Galva Township East Cemetery of Galva. A public time of visitation will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the American Legion Dibbern Post #454 of Galva. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested a memorial to the Galva Fire Department. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein is in charge of the arrangements.

Dale James Davenport was born on Feb. 26, 1948 at Cherokee, to John and Darleen (Stamp) Davenport, the eldest of their family of seven children. He grew up on a farm southeast of Galva. Many hours were spent working on the farm where he came to love old tractors. He also spent many hours with his grandparents, Charles and Esther (Nadelhoffer) Davenport and Emiel and Agnes (Sorensen) Stamp.

Dale attended Galva Community School from 1953 until graduation on May 24, 1966. Dale enrolled in the first Farm Equipment Mechanics course at Western Iowa Tech Community College, graduating in May, 1969. He was confirmed at the Silver Creek Methodist Church in 1962 and moved his membership to Galva First United Methodist Church until it closed.

Dale worked a variety of jobs in the area including mechanical, a chemical plant, slipping concrete on elevators in Ida Grove, Alta and Galva. In 1981, he did a lifetime dream job of working on the wheat and corn combine harvest traveling from Oklahoma to Colorado and Montana (very near the Canadian border).

In 1982, Dale moved back to Galva where he drove truck, worked at Galva Union Elevator and Tyson Fresh Meats in Storm Lake. He did part-time jobs due to his declining health in later years.

Dale was a 35-year member of the Galva Volunteer Fire Department and proud to serve. He served 13 years as a member of the original First Responders of Galva. Dale belonged to two tractor clubs and enjoyed going to equipment shows and tractor rides. Dale took pride in helping the Galva American Legion Post with flags and military funerals as a member of the Sons of the American Legion. He liked history and family genealogy as well as his dogs and those of family members.

In November, 2023 Dale decided to sell his 213 Monona St. home in Galva where he had lived since 1989. At that time, he moved to Evergreen Terrace Apartments in Sioux City, and made many new friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; grandparents; brother, Dean Davenport of Odebolt; step-father, Claire Bradtke and brother-in-law, John Cork.

Surviving are siblings: Kay Cork of Ida Grove, Charles Davenport of Le Mars, Zoe Spitz of The Villages, Florida, Janet Hansen of Cherokee and Glen Davenport of Paso Robles, California. His seven nieces and nephews, Jill Groetken, Klint Cork, Terry Zembsch, Judd Zembsch, Stephanie Hauser, Brandi Hansen, and Bridget Ludwig were very special to him along with his great nieces and nephews.
